I Call Upon You and the New South Wales Government which you represent, to take immediate action to reduce the chronic traffic, noise and road safety problems in Ballina, New South Wales, caused by the Pacific Highway passing directly through the congested residential and commercial parts of the town. In particular, the following actions would bring immediate relief :

(a) Cancel permission for B-double trucks to use the Pacific Highway until such time as the dual carriageway upgrade between Tweed Heads and Newcastle is completed entirely. These vehicles should use the New England Highway.

(b) Impose an 80kph speed limit for trucks travelling on all non-upgraded sections of the Pacific Highway.

(c) Commence work urgently on the long-overdue Ballina Bypass.

As well as relieving congestion and safety problems in Ballina, these acts would bring an immediate easing of similar problems that plague the Pacific Highway from Newcastle to Tweed Heads.
